           Hidden in Hilantagaan island, a Barangay within the Municipality of Santa Fe in Northern Cebu, is a secret that few visitors and residents share about Cabyao Cave. This humble and intriguing cave has more to offer than protection from the sun it is proof of the island's natural wonders, local folklore, and unexploited ecotourism attractions.

            While Bantayan Island itself is already famous for its white beaches, clear waters, and tranquil vibe, nearby Hilantagaan is still somewhat off the beaten path. Most travelers are content to stay within Santa Fe's commercial corridor, ignoring the satellite islets nearby. But for the adventurous and inquisitive type, Hilantagaan and particularly Cabyao Cave has a different kind of adventure one of discovery, realness, and connectivity to the country and the people

            Hilantagaan is a tiny island located just east of Bantayan Island. A 20 to 25 minutes boat trip from the mainland of Santa Fe will bring you to this tranquil fishing community where time passes slowly and smiles are natural. With its inhabitants living most importantly from fishing and small scale agriculture, Hilantagaan is an area where the ocean offers, the earth protects, and bonds of community keep strong.

           The history behind the name Cabyao Cave, we interviewed a long resident of Hilantagaan by the name of Elisa Villabrille, a 68 year old female resident of Sitio Barjes Purok Liswik, Barangay Hilantagaan, Santa Fe, Cebu. In accordance with Nanay Elisa, Cabyao Cave has been a known shelter of paniki (bats) in their area for as long as they could remember. She remembers that as far back as her childhood, the cave already housed a lot of bats, especially late afternoons when they would emerge in flocks. These bats are the primary reason the cave was named "Cabyao," derived from how the people would call the place as well as its creature dwellers. But what made the cave all the more significant, she related, was what transpired during Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in 2013. When the typhoon hit in all its fury, most residents including her neighbors sought refuge in Cabyao Cave. The cave's solid rock walls served as a life saving haven for humans and animals alike. Nanay Elisa remembered how the cave shielded them from the strong winds, flying objects, and rains. Her own experience is a poignant reminder that Cabyao Cave is not only a natural wonder but also part of the people's collective memory of survival and perseverance. It is because of individuals like Nanay Elisa who keep sharing their stories that future generations can more fully appreciate the cultural and historical significance of this very secret gem.

           Traveling to Cabyao Cave takes a little planning and sense of adventure. From Santa Fe, you will have to take a small motorized boat going to Hilantagaan Island. When you get there, you will be greeted by smiling locals who are only too eager to lead you often without expecting anything from you but a smile or a "thank you.".

            There are no signboards or tourist markers pointing to the cave, so it’s best to go with someone who knows the area. The walk to the cave is relatively short but may involve uneven paths, so wear sturdy footwear. Along the way, you’ll pass by coastal scenery, rocky outcrops and then, there it is Cabyao Cave unassuming in size, enigmatic in atmosphere, and full of tales. As you hunch or crawl your way inside, you're greeted immediately by the cool, moist air a nice reprieve from the hot tropical air outside. The inside of the cave is not large in scale but is charming. Bats might have made their home in the cracks and if you are fortunate enough you might be able to hear the faint sound of dripping water resonating in the silence. 

              Cabyao Cave might not make it to the travel publications and guidebooks, but it is everything that makes off the beaten path travel worth it. It's a site where history, nature, and myth come together in silent beauty. It's a reminder that there are times when the greatest memories come from where no one speaks of the places that remain sacred to the locals, still shrouded in mystery from the world. So if you are in Santa Fe, Cebu, take that brief boat trip to Hilantagaan. Talk to the people. Ask them about the cave. Take the dirt trail. And when you finally duck down and enter Cabyao Cave, slow down and listen not only to the quiet, but to the whispers of the rocks, the air, and your own sense of adventure. They allow us to remember that sites such as Cabyao Cave are not mere geographical landmarks they're part of a living culture. In an era of mass tourism and staged travel experiences, Cabyao Cave presents something unique and authenticity.

               It's a destination that hasn't been modified to appease tourists or honed to look more "Instagrammable." What you see is what you get a small cave with a large heart.

It's a really beautiful tourist spot, especially if the cleanliness is maintained, and the rocks are also beautiful if arranged. Even though it's far, it's really worth it once you're here."

 Llan Jade's reflection "As Ate Niña said, if only Cabyao Cave is improved, many tourists will really come, and it's a really beautiful tourist spot. So if Cabyao Cave is improved, we can promote it or post it on YouTube like what we're doing now, and tourists will come here once it's fixed up. As what we have experienced, it's far but really worth it. When you go here, you'll see three views: mountains, the sea, and Cabyao Cave itself. So what are you waiting for? Come on over!"

               The rocks inside Cabyao Cave are truly beautiful. If they were arranged properly and the area was well-maintained and kept clean, the cave would look even more amazing. Yes, it’s a bit far to reach but once you get there, it’s all worth it. The place has a peaceful, untouched charm that makes it a perfect tourist spot. If this cave is improved and protected, there’s no doubt that it can be promoted online on platforms like YouTube, Facebook, or even vlogs. It could be just like what we've done in our own area, showing the world how local nature can shine.
